The practical approach and the classic way to do it are to apply the adage, “Use less, save more”. While everyone could agree on that, the devil will always hound the details, so how?

Even before the news of a cooling economy hit the papers, consumers across the globe have been finding ways to save money, trying always to have more with less. This is truer now.

With cooler winters ahead in many parts of the world and rising energy prices, the Alliance to Save Energy predicted that the average American household will have to spend $1,700 more on utility and gas pump this year compared to just two years ago. Using less and saving more is still a good idea, but alone, it may not suffice.

This year, winter heating cost is projected by the Energy Information Administration to increase an average of 15%. This is not only caused by higher energy costs but by the cooler winters that are expected.

The 15% projected higher heating costs will of course vary and is dependent to some variables like the characteristics of the space heated, the kind of fuel used for heating and where the consumer is located. Just the same, homes using natural gas as its fuel for heating, which comprise 50% of American households can expect an increase in heating cost by as much as 18%; households that are using oil could expect an increase in heating costs by as much as 23%; while those using electricity and propane will have to shell out about 10% to 11% more.

The advancement in technology gives rise to energy saving devices. Before, the main contention was that most of these devices cost more; and sometimes, the amount of energy saved did not really justify the price. But in today’s setup, the effort in cutting the energy cost has made some improvements on the efficiency of energy saving devices. With the threat of a cooling economy, energy saving devices are once again in focus. There are various and very practical devices that could be used in saving energy and they come in different brands, labels, methods of operation and products. Some saving energy suggestions are:

The solar heaters – this energy-saving device provides heating for both space and water. Depending on the type of solar heater that is used (be it a part of the structure of the home or one that engage the use of a mechanical device), solar heaters are definite money saver. It is easy on the environment too. Greenpeace should love this one.

Electrical saving devices. These are devices that you plug into your socket that promise to reduce the volume of energy that you consume by stabilizing the flow of your electric current. The only limitation to these devices is that it could only control a specific volume of wattage, say 3000 watts, at any given time. If the household will use more than the wattage capacity that the device could handle, another device should be plugged in.

Finally, there are the energy saving light bulbs, lamps, heaters, appliances and other gizmos and gadgets.

But the fact remains that saving energy is fast becoming the order of the day taking into account the current realities. So if all the energy saving devices out there will still not suffice, the “use less and save more” principle will still add a good deal to your savings.

Sometimes it takes more than one to push the boundaries of technology. It seems that no matter how much renewable energy marketing is actively propagated it seems that there are just some that can’t maintain their composure and just dissolve in thin air.

Renewable energy company owners are more often than not optimistic that it could sustain a considerable number of houses and can talk owners into converting to solar paneled roof tops to cut energy costs.

First, not all consumers are as optimistic as the company. Sure consumers are open for talks and introductions but purchasing is another thing. Unless current energy resources are all flushed down the toilet, consumers will just find ways in saving up without converting into renewable energy.

Take for example the water powered car. We’ve heard of it and it has been on sale for more than a year but how many people actually owns them? The initial cost of a hydro-car costs as much as $5000 for a two-seater car. For a tiny car, you might want to pause and think.

Second, large scale renewable energy plants require a certain amount of land. In cases of hydro-electric plants a construction of a large dam is a must. It takes money and good fore sight to make everything work.

Dams that are built in a poorly results to unsightly calamities so good fore sight is needed to guarantee stability and of the dam. Energy plants need the luxury of space in order to operate properly. On the other hand, in most parts of the world, space is scarce and is demand than ever.

Third, it is too darn costly at the start. Unless a renewable energy company is an off shoot of a larger more stable company, small renewable energy company crumbles within the first few years of it being established.

The demand for renewable energy materials are is just too low at the moment. No matter how aware people are, converting their household into eco friendly homes may take them a back before they try it out. It takes weeks of thinking before people change all their lighting from incandescent to energy saving fluorescent bulbs.

How much more thinking would you think it will require for them to install a solar panel or a wind mill to cut down energy costs by half?

Fourth, innovator and manufacturer misunderstanding can lead the renewable energy company to crumble. If the company is dependent on a manufacturer other than them manufacturing the products, misunderstanding can easily break the ties of the two companies. Thus leading the other to fall apart and die.

It is a different case however if the company manufacture their own products. Nonetheless, small scale renewable energy companies can not afford such production especially if small quantities are asked to be produced.

Production cost would be higher therefore market price is higher than mainstream renewable energy companies.

Lastly, after the hype of renewable energy marketing, the idea burns out and takes an exit on the scene. Harsh but true, once local television networks stops advocating the use of it, the hype disappears and so is the hope of selling these products.

There also appears to be confusion between alternative energy technology and renewable energy technology. Alternative energy encompasses all renewable energy sources, but includes things like nuclear power and energy from municipal waste. These are carbonaceous examples. With the information available about renewable energy technology, it is possible to build renewable energy products, such as a windmill or solar panel, on your own. Do-it-yourselfers are saving huge amounts of pocket change by building and installing these systems themselves. If you have the money to invest in a commercial professionally installed system, in general these are more efficient, however, savings can still be realized, and at a much faster rate, by researching and building your own renewable energy systems.
